Prohibited Uses
Under the BSL License for SDV

The SDV Community Edition (hereinafter referred to as "SDV Community") is distributed under the Business Source License (BSL), effective as of November 2022, with the corresponding release. It includes the following libraries: SDV, CTGAN, RDT, SDGym, Copulas, DeepEcho.

All libraries are licensed under the Business Source License published within the github repository. Our team has shared the rationale behind transitioning from a commercially permissible license to a more restrictive one, which you can read here.

To address frequently asked questions about the implications of the BSL, we're providing the following guidance.

Restrictions for All Organizations Using SDV Community

Under the current BSL, you are expressly prohibited from using SDV Community for several commercial purposes, including, but not limited to:

  • Deploying SDV Community in any customer environment;

  • Generating synthetic data using SDV Community and sharing it with any third party;

  • Sharing any artifacts, outputs, or derivative works generated using SDV Community with any third party;

  • Distributing SDV Community (in whole or in part) bundled with your own software or services;

  • Performing or supporting proof-of-concept (PoC) activities for any customer using SDV Community;

  • Providing any script, code, or tool that requires a customer or third party to install or use SDV Community independently; and

  • Creating a platform using SDV Community such that it allows third parties (other than your employees and contractors) to access the functionality of SDV Community so that such third parties directly benefit from SDV Community.

Additional Restrictions for System Integrators, Consulting Organizations and Consulting Divisions

If you are a System Integrator (SI)*, Consulting Organization** or Consulting Division***, you are also prohibited from:

  • Creating or delivering demonstrations, presentations, or marketing materials that feature or incorporate SDV Community for clients or third parties.

*System Integrators - organizations or business units primarily engaged in designing, implementing, customizing, or maintaining software solutions or systems on behalf of third parties.
**Consulting Organizations - firms or divisions that provide technology consulting, professional services, or outsourcing as their primary line of business.
***Consulting Divisions - any division, subsidiary, or business unit within a company whose primary function is consulting or system integration, even if other divisions are engaged in independent software development or product sales.
****Consulting Individuals - professionals who offer technology consulting, professional services, or outsourcing independently or as freelancers, typically on a contract or project basis.

Guidance for Global 2000 Organizations

If you are part of a Global 2000 organization and interested inSDV Community:

  • We encourage and support the use of SDV Community for internal use cases and internal platform development. If you require an exemption from any of the restrictions outlined above in “Restrictions for All Organizations using SDV Community”, please contact us directly. Our team will review your request and respond within 24 to 48 hours.
  • We encourage you to contact us directly for authorized trials, evaluations, or PoCs. Our team is happy to support your onboarding and provide appropriate access.
  • Internal use of SDV Community may already be occurring within your organization. We recommend conducting an internal review or survey to assess any existing use of SDV Community or similar synthetic data technologies.
  • As per above, our license prohibits System Integrators, Consulting Organizations, and Consulting Divisions from providing your team with scripts or tools that require internal installation of SDV Community. Doing so constitutes a direct breach of the license terms.

The SDV Community Edition includes the following libraries:

Library name
Detail
License as published
The Synthetic Data Vault (SDV) is a Python library designed to be your one-stop shop for creating tabular synthetic data. The SDV uses a variety of machine learning algorithms to learn patterns from your real data and emulate them in synthetic data.
CTGAN is a collection of Deep Learning based synthetic data generators for single table data, which are able to learn from real data and generate synthetic data with high fidelity.
RDT (Reversible Data Transforms) is a Python library that transforms raw data into fully numerical data, ready for data science.
The Synthetic Data Gym (SDGym) is a benchmarking framework for modeling and generating synthetic data.
Copulas is a Python library for modeling multivariate distributions and sampling from them using copula functions
DeepEcho is a Synthetic Data Generation Python library for mixed-type, multivariate time series

* hereinafter referred to as SDV Library.
